Looping back to Hobart

We continued our very enjoyable southward trek down the East Coast. The weather was just sublime for the Labour Day weekend in Tasmania. The Tasmanians even thought it was good enough to go swimming, not for me though. We called into the delightful seaside town of Triabunna for morning tea, got talking to some kindred travellers and finished up staying for lunch as well. While we were talking over morning tea a very strange event occurred, the water in the estuary suddenly vacated, we thought that the tide must drop rapidly in this area. As we continued swapping our travel yarns the water suddenly started coming back in and quickly reached a height greater than when we had first arrived. We did not think too much about this strange occurrance until much later and then it dawned on me that what we saw must have been a ripple in the ocean from the Japan Earthquake. The sudden change in water levels would have been well over 30 cm. There is a Fish'n'Chip Van in Triabunna by the harbour, we joined the vast queue to try the local fare, it was worth the wait, Trevalla and Chips was excellent.

We continued on to our booked caravan site at Seven Mile Beach, a northern suburb of Hobart that borders the Hobart Airport. You maybe wondering why we are looping back towards Hobart, well it is a long story, but suffice to say I was summonsed to attend a trial in Hervey Bay, I was to fly out of Hobart on Wednesday 16th March. As events turned out, I was phoned on Monday afternoon 14th and advised that I was no longer required in Hervey Bay and that I could now continue my holiday unhindered. Well folks that is what we will now do! We reduced our booking at Seven Mile Beach to two nights and then headed out west towards Strahan.

This is the part of the estuary that vacated of water then refilled in the space of about 20 minutes, this is not normal tidal action.

Triabunna is a popular holiday and fishing destination, not too far out of Hobart.

The Seven Mile Beach CP is really on a beach that is seven miles long, we walked most of it and this boat shed is at the south end.

As we headed northwards and homewards from the boat shed we saw this local family fishing for their dinner, hope they were successful.

The beach was beautiful and clean. Don't be fooled by the sunshine though, the breeze was fairly nippy.

From Bellerive looking over the water towards Mt Wellington and Wrest Point Casino at the water's edge.
