Campaspe River Rest Area - Sat 7th & Sun 8th Nov.

The Campaspe River Rest Area on the Flinders Highway, 90 km west of Charters Towers, is dominated by a huge mango tree. Unfortunately, for us, the fruit was not ripe enough to pick.

We had late afternoon shade under the mango tree.

Saturday saw many people come and go but Sunday night the area was probably close to capacity. The Rest Area is wedged between the highway and the Mount Isa rail line. Now you might think that this arrangement might disturb one's sleep, in actual fact the frequency of vehicles, both road and rail, largely halted overnight. So a sound sleep was assured. We actually amused ourselves waving to the train crews to receive a loud horn blast in reply, some kids never grow up!

A track from the Rest Area towards the river bed (no water) and the railway bridge. The line passed very close to our van.

General view of the river bed consisting of deep deposits of river gravel.

Lizzie enjoyed exploring. She is managing the trip very well.

There wasn't much else to do but wander along the creek bed.

Under the road bridge.

View of the Rest Area from near the road bridge. There is a shelter, picnic tables and another water tank just out of the picture to the left.

Sunday evening, just after dinner, a storm cell passed over and dumped many mm of rain. The Rest Area was awash all over, just a sheet of water, but we had no leaks in the van. This was our first experience in the rain with the van.

  1. I love mangoes that are not ripe. I love to eat them with tomatoes and fish paste or just unripe mango with salt and chili. The sea bed seems to be dried for quite some time huh?
