Charters Towers, Attractions - Mon 9th to Wed 11th November

In the previous posting (look to the archives) I have presented some of Charters Towers Architecture, in this posting I will present some of the many attractions in the city.

Dominating the Charters Towers skyline is this ridge with a look out perched on the top.

The panels in the picture describe the history of the City, the theme right through all the tourist information and promotion in the city is; "Voices from the Ghosts of the Gold Era". While in the background is an amphitheatre where an audio/visual display is shown each night.

Of course there are many gold mining relics, like this Poppit Head.

In Lissner Park is this memorial to the local lads who went to the Boer War.

The interior of Boer War Memorial Kiosk.

Fountain in recognition of the Federation of Australia.

Two German field guns from WW 1.

Memorial to Jasper Mossman an Aboriginal whom was part of the group of three that discovered the first gold in the area.

Park feature in recognition of the early gold fossikers in the area.

Another view of the feature above.

The city water supply comes from this weir on the Burdekin River. As you can see, water is flowing over the weir and we haven't got to the 'wet season' yet. At the point where I am standing it is about 6 m above the weir level, the peak flood mark of January 1991 is almost 6 m above my feet. It is difficult to visualise such a volume of water flowing down the river. The Dalrymple Reservoir, the main Burdekin Dam, is down stream from here. Look at the sky, our last day here and it is raining, not good for photography!

Picnic grounds at the weir.

The weir was built in two stages, the first in 1902 and the weir was at capacity within two weeks of completion. The second stage was completed 1996 to triple the capacity of the original construction. These two concrete blocks represent the cross section of both of the weir walls at 50% scale.

  1. I love the giant boomerang, I wonder if they were actually able to let it fly. What does weir mean actually? Is it like a dam? It must be great to have a picnic with the family or friends in that area. The place looks so clean and so pure.
