Goondiwindi

The town of Goondiwindi (Gundi) is the entry point to Queensland when you travel north on the Newell Highway. Gundi is situated on the McIntyre River. This river forms the boundary with NSW. The water in the McIntyre flows west through several name changes until reaching the Murray River via the  Darling River.

This old steel bridge was originally the main highway link to NSW, now largely utilised  for local traffic.

Adjacent to the steel bridge is a statue of Gunsynd in Apex Park. Gunsynd was a legendary racehorse owned by a syndicate from this town. Gunsynd sits on top of a 12 metre levee bank that protects the town from flood flows down the McIntyre. The river peaked at 11.8 metres in 2001, that was close!!

The Cultural and Community Centre, pictured, the football grounds of all codes, the bowling club and the hospital are all situated directly under the levee bank. A 4 km walk/bike path has been placed on top of the levee enabling great views and access to the river and the town.

Somebody lives here. This is a typical "queenslander" style home construction from an era past, still found in most Queensland towns today, although this style is no longer in vogue. The ubiquitous home on a slab with aircon, like anywhere else, is the norm.
